Computer simulation of particle acceleration in thin foil by ultrashort laser pulses
نویسندگان
چکیده
Particles acceleration triggered by relativistic laser pulses consisting of only a few optical cycles has been studied with 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The electrons are accelerated predominantly in forward direction for preplasma longer than the pulse length. The most effective electron acceleration takes place when the preplasma scale length is comparable to the pulse-duration. The tails of electron distribution functions are well approximated by the Maxwellian distribution with a hot temperature of MeV range. The electrons accelerated in the underdense plasma penetrate deep inside or through the target and set up a strong electrostatic field which accelerates ions forward and decelerates electrons. Because ions are more heavier than electrons, a quite long laser pulse is needed to accelerate them. 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 52.38.Kd; 52.35.Mw; 52.65.Ff; 52.65.Rr

Short pulse laser interaction with micro-structured targets: simulations of laser absorption and ion acceleration
The interaction of an ultrashort intense laser pulse with thin foil targets is accompanied by the acceleration of ions from the target surface. To make this ion source suitable for application, it is of particular importance to increase the efficiency of laser energy transformation into accelerated ions and the maximum ion energy. This can be achieved by using a thin foil target with a microsco...
متن کاملA Femtosecond Neutron Source
The possibility to use the ultrashort ion bunches produced by circularly polarized laser pulses to drive a source of fusion neutrons with sub-optical cycle duration is discussed. A two-side irradiation of a deuterated thin foil target produces two countermoving ion bunches, whose collision produces an ultrashort neutron burst. Using particle-in-cell simulations and analytical modeling, it is ev...
متن کاملThe interaction of intense laser pulses with thin foils is accompanied by the acceleration of ions to energies of tens of megaelectronvolts [1–4]. The production of high-quality beams of ions
Plasma produced by short laser pulses from thin homogeneous foils with light and heavy ions is capable of generating quasi-monoenergetic light ions. This happens for the tail of light ions near the front of heavy ions. It was found that this effect is well pronounced for a moderate laser intensity (~10 18 W/cm 2 ) and pulse duration (~1 ps) by using a 2D particle-in-cell simulation of the laser...
متن کاملRadiation pressure acceleration of thin foils with circularly polarized laser pulses
A new regime is described for radiation pressure acceleration of a thin foil by an intense laser beam of above 1020 W cm. Highly monoenergetic proton beams extending to giga-electron-volt energies can be produced with very high efficiency using circularly polarized light. The proton beams have a very small divergence angle (<4). This new method allows the construction of ultracompact proton and...
متن کاملStable GeV ion-beam acceleration from thin foils by circularly polarized laser pulses.
A stable relativistic ion acceleration regime for thin foils irradiated by circularly polarized laser pulses is suggested. In this regime, the "light-sail" stage of radiation pressure acceleration for ions is smoothly connected with the initial relativistic "hole-boring" stage, and a defined relationship between laser intensity I0, foil density n{0}, and thickness l{0} should be satisfied. For ...
